31mm pentax limited review

It features a beautiful aluminum body with metallic silver finish comes equipped with a flower-shaped lens hood. Also available in black. I'm not a professional photographer but my cousin works in the industry. We used the Pentax 31mm for some of the photos added to my moving company website, and it looks absolutely amazing. It's definitely a good quality and very elegant lens.

The image is sharp. Hyperfocus and high-quality lens, best one I've used so far. The FA31 is an amazing lens, the sharpest I've come across, excellent for panormas, portraits, and landscapes. With its metal contruction, with a built-in lens-shade, and fairly substantial weight almost a pound! Sharp even fully open, with wonderful bokeh, ideal for those days with a clear sky, or in the studio.

It doesn't like backlighting at all, so misty days are not ideal, nor sunsets, or street lights. The built-in hood isn't ideal, nor is the lens cap. It isn't easy to put on, and falls off occasionally, especially when the felt inside gets worn. What I like about the lens: - The aluminum construction is high quality and has a great feel in the hands to it.

I wish that more lenses were offered in aluminum like this. All I can say is find one to try and you will understand. It has enough room for your left hand to grip the lens while shooting. Just keep in mind 35mm lenses are usually more expensive, except for the DA 35mm f2. It makes the lens seem lower quality than it is. This lens would be much more impressive if it had internal focus. Revision wish list: This is a quality lens overall, but I do see some room for improvement. The Pentax 31mm f1.

Since its release, the 31 Ltd has been beloved, especially within the Pentax community. I picked up my first copy in pursuit of a fast, decently priced alternative to the Sony RX1. The 31mm focal length is an oddity, being near but noticeably different from the more conventional 28mm or 35mm focal lengths.

The 31 ltd functions as versatile jack-of-trades lens with its 31 FL. T o view larger versions of the photos in this review, follow this link to my Pentax 31 ltd album on flickr :. The 31 Ltd is wonderfully built: all metal, mechanical, light, sturdy, tactile, and refined. I wish more manufactures took this approach.

Because of this, the lens has a shorter focus throw than most manual focus lenses. We have hard stops at MFD and infinity. This took me some time to get used to, and can still be annoying when shooting along side other lenses. The 31 Ltd is not environmentally sealed like newer lenses. Having said that, I shot the lens in humid, rainy and sandy environments without issue thus far.

The aperture ring displays full stops starting at f2, but rests at unmarked half stops, except between f16 and f Each half stop has a light but definite click. The lens sports a permeant hood, which I dislike as it makes the lens heavier and longer than necessary.

For the attached hood, I wish Pentax would have at least made it collapsible like on the 77 Limited.

While the naked lens is not large or heavy at g, an adapter is required. My adapter weighs about g. However, the adapter bumps up the compact size, turning this into a medium sized but well balanced partner on the A7iii.

I know of no documented changes over the production run.Manufacturer description: With sleek aesthetics and exceptional performance, the ultra-fast smc Pentax FA 31mm F1. It features outstanding sharpness and clarity, in a compact all-metal housing that characterizes all Pentax Limited lenses.

FA Limited lenses come with film-era features like an aperture ring and all metal casings with an emphasis on a hand-assembled feel of quality. The focal length of 31mm is a nice wide angle lens on full-frame, but in APS-C it turns into the equivalent of a 46mm normal lens.

The maximum aperture of f1. Build quality is very high for this lens. It has an all aluminum casing with a metal mount and a built-in aluminum hood designed for full-frame of course with black felt on the inside to minimize reflections. The lens cap is also aluminum with green felt on the inside to provide a tight friction seal. The focus ring and aperture ring are machined aluminum to fit with the casing quality. The focus ring does not feature quick-shift functionality and rotates when auto-focus is activated.

The lens does not have internal focusing, so the front part of the lens moves a bit when focusing. It uses screw driven auto-focus as it does not have a motor inside. Images straight from the lens are very sharp throughout the frame. Background blur is top-notch, producing smooth featureless rendering with sharp in-focus areas that gives a 3D effect in the right situations.

The lens naturally produces warm high contrast results taking perceived sharpness of the lens even further. These three properties together in a wide angle lens are what make it so special.

What I like about the lens: — The aluminum construction is high quality and has a great feel in the hands to it.

The same goes for lens coatings. Make sure lenses of this caliber have a narrow sample variation. Conclusion: This is probably my most used lens ever. The lens has great build quality and features, but I feel there is room for improvement if Pentax would take the time and effort to make it happen. I just hope that if they do revise the lens, they will keep the features that make it special such as the all-metal build and FA features like the aperture ring, but also improve the perceived limited nature by adding things like internal focusing and quick-shift.

I look forward to someday using this lens on a full-frame Pentax DSLR so that I can see the true wide-angle nature of this lens, but until that day this will be my general take everywhere lens to get the job done.

Chances are you will start neglecting your other lenses for the 31mm, so keep that in mind! Close Menu Navigation. Latest Posts. Convention Photography Book. Newsletter Archive. This Site.

You can gauge my style of photography below. Is the 31mm limited my best option for the K-1? For still photographers, we feel the Nikon Z5 represents the best value for the money when it comes to full-frame mirrorless cameras.

Which is why it receives our top award. The Sony ZV-1 was designed specifically for vloggers, but this compact camera is an excellent option for still photographers too. We got our hands on the brand new Instax SQ1: an easy-to-use instant camera that shoots square format film. Despite a couple of quirks, we think it's a camera that photographers and non-photographers alike will find fun to use. Sony's a7C is among the smallest full-frame mirrorless cameras you can buy, and in terms of core capability, not much has been sacrificed for the sake of compactness.

Jim King.Favored as a good performer, the FA is getting quite old now, but can it still produce the goods? These days, with lenses looking sparse on the barrel, it does look decidedly old school. The FA is almost in between focal lengths as most would go for either go for a 28mm or 35mm instead of the 31mm which gives a slightly different perspective.

It works well as a general wide-angle lens. The first observation with the lens is that it comes in a sleek silver color, adding to its old school looks. Standard black is also available, but if you have the option, silver is the color to go for.

The filter size is 58mm and the whole lens weighs in at a reasonable g. The outer barrel is made of aluminum, built extremely well, and looks and feels both vintage and new at the same time. There are the usual distance scale and lens aperture ring with stop markings. One nice benefit of this is that the aperture ring has a nice click when moving positions, similar to how a fully manual lens feels.

When focusing, you have to go manual with this lens. It takes a little bit of getting used to, especially the direction of the focus ring, but you soon get into a routine that works for nail sharp images. From 0. Basically, no complaints with the operation. On initial impressions, images come out very sharp, even when wide open, but the corners can be a little soft.

Start cranking the lens beyond this point and diffraction starts setting in. When things like sunlight are directly in view you have to be more mindful, as there are more ghosting artifacts than nice star shapes. Therefore, you have to be mindful of where you place the sun in an image. Vignetting is also typical of this type of wide-angle lens, giving 1.

Fully wide-open the bokeh is pretty good. The colors transition well, and while there is some fringing, it can be easily removed in postprocessing. They may not be direct comparisons at a focal length of 31mm, both there are a few comparable lenses at 28mm and 35mm, especially if you want to plant one on a Sony camera. The Sony Zeiss ZM 35mm f1. The Sony FE 28 f2 costs less and is smaller, but all round again the Pentax wins it over. The main question is if the Pentax can hold its own against modern prime lenses.

It definitely has a unique viewpoint with a 31mm focal length and there are only a few downsides. Most importantly, the lens gives a very nice depth or even 3D look to images.
